A city built deep within the
thick forests and steep mountain slopes of Northern
British Columbia, Terrace is a toss of spectacular landscapes and exhilarating
outdoor adventure. The region features a unique terraced landscape, shaped by
the glaciers that passed through thousands of years ago, which lends itself to
the city's name. Located along the Skeena
River, 140 km (87 mi) east of Prince
Rupert, this is one of the oldest continuously occupied places in the world.
In fact, long before European contact, it was one of the most densely populated
areas north of Mexico. This First Nations history is fascinating and helps make
Terrace the dynamic city it is today—a multicultural centre and regional
hub for the northern coastal area of British Columbia. As such, there is plenty
to see and do around Terrace; Mount
Layton Hot Springs is just 22 km (13 mi) to the south; the country's youngest
lava
flow is only 80 km (50 mi) to the north; Heritage
Park offers a journey through the history of Terrace's early settlers while
Kitselas
Canyon and the village of Kitsumkalum
enable one to explore First Nation's history; and Terrace is even one of the only
places to glimpse the rare Kermodei Bear.
